You will never progress by perfecting the imperfect
I’ve found this quote somewhere, sadly I don’t remember where. A small research about this, suggests only a similar quote from Winston’s Churchill: “Perfection is the enemy of progress”. If someone knows, where this is coming from, please let me know.
I wanted to write about this topic for a while now, so this post title was written with an empty body and waiting to be completed.
But it makes sooo much fun. I love working again and again on the same topic and make it perfect.
Sadly this loop will never end, because there is always something to improve. It’s like consume without creating something.
I’ve realized this, be reflecting some old projects. And the one which got the least love is still running and is doing its job. I’ve wrote it just to serve one purpose and then never checked again, because it is still serving its purpose. Over the years I’ve tried a couple of times to write a new version with more content but failed, by never finishing it. But I still need to finish it someday. 😅 The only things I did over time on this project, removing parts of it. From a python flask application, to a static html page.
Another project is my [[pelletyze.app]], which I’ve tried to make as perfect as possible and worked in the past 2-3 years on and off on it. But someday I’ve realized, if I continue with this style of work, I will never finish it. So I prepared some milestones with features I really really need for a release and moved everything else into the backlog as “nice to have for later”. And voila, I did a release which everyone can checkout. I have this “need for completion” out of my mind and can work on features when there is time. Because there is already a working version of it.
I still love to optimize projects to the infinity. But before I can “afford” it, I need to setup a milestone, where I can release something to the world. After this, I can still try to make it perfect, IF I don’t have any other project ideas waiting in the back. 😅
